Caution Students: How can Plagiarism be detected?

Plagiarism can be detected in different ways:

  • Students: Be careful before citing matter from the Internet because :

In University of Pittsburgh, there is a software which can find any text if it is copied from the Internet. Hence it is very important to cite the source properly and have quotation marks around the text.

  • Checking for strange format that does not match the requirements. In particular, check for website printout page numbers or dates, grayed out letters and unusual use of upper/lower case and capitalization.

  • Notice any terminology or advanced vocabulary or sentence structure.

  • Referring the original assignment. To see if all the matter in the paper is coherent. To see if there have been any positions of the assignment left out? Do any portions read like they were "added on" to the paper?
  • Note Students:

Review the bibliography. Is the correct citation style used? Is the citation style used consistently? Does it match the sources referenced in the paper?
