My
position as Music, Theatre, Dance Librarian extends to
include many different areas of librarianship. The responsibilities
are smaller in theatre and dance than in music, which is
my background and main interest. I am currently responsible
for the selection of materials and management of the collections
for the disciplines of Music, Theatre, and Dance in the
Hamon Arts Library at Southern Methodist University. This
involves choosing materials of all formats including print,
sound recordings, videos, and CD-ROMs. A good portion of
my time is spent at the reference desk where I assist users
in the identification, location, utilization, and interpretation
of print and electronic resources, including the library's
online catalog, CD-ROM, networks and online databases.
I am also responsible for all user education sessions in
my three disciplines, including print and electronic information
resources and the Internet. Other duties include serving
as a faculty liaison, membership in library and university
committees, training and supervising of student assistants,
and performing software and hardware troubleshooting for
the Hamon electronic resource center.
If your interest is in becoming a Music or Performing
Arts Librarian, I would suggest taking as many classes
as possible in those subjects outside of SIS. Unfortunately,
I was only able to take Historical Musicology, but I
have heard very good things about the Music Bibliography
course. Knowledge that I use everyday was gained from
Father Almagno's classes, especially his Humanities course.
I did an internship in the Music and Art Department
at the Carnegie Library, which was of immense help to
me in my career. I also worked as the Information Assistant
in Reference at Carnegie Mellon, which was also an immense
help. There are plenty of opportunities for a variety
of internships in the area. If you have any questions
or would like to contact me, my email address is asnee@mail.smu.edu.
