Students in the MLIS degree program come from a wide
variety of backgrounds. A significant number of the students
are
recent college graduates -- from schools such as Bryn Mawr,
Carnegie Mellon, Notre Dame, the University of Pennsylvania,
and Rensselaer -- seeking careers of service as librarians,
archivists, or information specialists. But there is also
an important place in the MLIS program for students interested
in pursuing a second career. In recent years, the program
has included lawyers, a pediatrician, corporate executives,
elementary and secondary school teachers, computer programmers,
Web specialists, and social workers, as well as paraprofessionals
from archives and libraries seeking an ALA-accredited Master’s
degree.

Post-Graduate Employment
Approximately 98 percent of the graduates of the MLIS
program find professional-level employment, and many go
on to hold leadership positions.
What types of positions do our graduates obtain? Many
of them work in academic, public, school, and special libraries
across Pennsylvania. Many others find employment in important
institutions in other parts of the country, including The
Library of Congress, Cornell University, Middlebury College,
the New York Public Library, the Enoch Pratt Free Library,
the National Archives, the Holocaust Museum, and OCLC,
as well as in the corporate sector, with companies such
as PPG, Federated Investors, and Lexis-Nexis.
